RYA Seamanship and RYA Start Racing Course

JOINING INSTRUCTIONS

GENERAL

1.   It is mandatory to do the Seamanship course before taking the Start Racing course.  On completion of the course, students will be eligible for the Seamanship and Start Racing certificates.

2.   Cost per course Adults: £60 (total for both courses £120)  Members under 18yrs: £30 (total for both courses £60)

3.   Timings: 1800 for 1830 until approx 2130

SEAMANSHIP: April -Thu 19, Wed 25th, May- Thur 3rd, Wed 9th, Thur 17th, Wed 23rd,

START RACING: May -Thur 31st, June- Wed 6th, Thur 14th, Wed 20th, Thur 28thJuly- Wed 6th, Thur 12th,

SPINNAKER EVENING (if sufficient interest): July- Wed 18TH

 

 

4.   Aims - The aims of the courses are:

a.  Seamanship: - To properly handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat.

b.  Start Racing: - To develop the skills and techniques to compete more effectively and with confidence in the Club's Racing Programmes and earn the award of the RYA Start Racing certificate.

5.   Method

a.   Timings

6.30pm start time. As soon as you arrive at the Club, get changed; rig your boat, launch and tie-up to a jetty.

8.45pm return to shore, De-rig boat and return or secure all borrowed gear in the proper place.

9pm prompt, Shore training starts.

9.30pm approx, Training session ends.

b.   Theory, Short informal theory sessions will be held at the end of each practical sailing evening.

c.   Homework, To encourage you to do background reading, you will be required to complete a short homework paper each week.  The Instructors will clear any points arising from the homework during the theory sessions.

d.   Clothing, you are reminded to wear suitable clothing and be prepared to get cold and wet!

e.   Safety, You MUST ALWAYS wear a buoyancy aid or lifejacket when on the jetties or afloat.

f.   Equipment, The Bosuns will be used for the Seamanship course.  For the Start Racing course you may use a Club boat, but it is preferable for you to use your own where possible (your boat must be suitably insured).  Please take great care of borrowed boats and equipment. Make good any loss or damage, so that the boat will be ready for subsequent training, you may be responsible for any excesses that cannot be covered by insurance .

g.   Instructors, All of the instructors are volunteers. They are giving up their leisure time to help you to get more out of your sailing. Please show your appreciation by using the knowledge you have gained to support the club sailing activities.
