 TWO DAY COURSE

RYA Youth Stage 1

AIM

1.     The aims of the course are to teach: -

        a.     Sailing and boat handling in a safe environment.

        b.     A basic knowledge of sailing and the ability able to handle a dinghy in light winds

        c.      To ensure maximum fun while learning.

TIMINGS and DATES

Assemble at 09.00  end at 4.30pm

Cost :- £40

During the preparation time students should get changed ready to sail and have their boat rigged by the start time.

THEORY

3.     The sources of the sailing theory are the RYA Start Sailing Handbook, RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Handbook and your Instructor.

CLOTHING

5.     Wear layers of warm clothing, protected by a wind / waterproof layer.    To protect your feet and the boat wear canvas shoes / trainers / wet boots / sailing wellies but NOT bare feet, high heels or gardening wellies!  Always bring a change of clothing and a towel with you, as you are going to get wet!!

SAFETY

6.     Buoyancy Aids  You MUST ALWAYS wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket while on the club premises and afloat in a boat.     Students are expected to provide their own, which are rated for the size and weight of the user.  As an interim measure, the club will lend you one.

7.     Lifting    Please, take care to lift boats correctly, some of them are very heavy and awkward.

8.     Falling    Slipways can be very slippery near the waterline.        The pontoons wobble, have things to trip over and often have bird droppings. Please take care.

9.     First Aid     Each safety boat has a basic First Aid kit and there is a more comprehensive box is near the phone, at the entrance to the galley and the list of those qualified in First Aid is on the wall above it.

10.    Parent / Guardian        In case of accident or illness, we have asked for the details of the student’s next of kin and any medicaments needed.

11.    Cold          If students are getting cold whilst on the water, they must tell the Instructor .  Be aware of the chill factor of the wind on wet surfaces.

12.    Medication  If the student is on medication that you think we may need to know about, please tell us.

EQUIPMENT

13.    Please take great care of the boats and equipment.  The boats belong to the club, are on loan from the Army, or are privately owned; damage is costly and time consuming to repair.   It also usually means that valuable sailing time is lost.       Please always make repairs yourself, if you can’t then  report any damage!

INSTRUCTION

14.    The course programme is not rigid.        Weather conditions may need alterations to the sequence, but all the listed exercises will be covered during the course.

15.    The Handbook & Logbook will be issued  (the cost is covered by the course fee) and you will get the appropriate certificate at the end of the course.     Ask your Instructor to sign off the stages of your progress in your Log Book. If you are having any problems or are not happy with any aspect of the course, please discuss them with your instructors or with me.

16.  Each person is individual; we expect them to progress at their own rate.    Some students may not be at the necessary level by the end of the course to receive a certificate, in which case they will be given a ”Progress Certificate” and we will offer to continue the training on subsequent courses. We will help you to progress, but the chasing of awards is not part of our aim.

17.    The Club is indebted to the Instructors who are all volunteers and willingly give up their precious time to ensure that we are able to offer these courses to members.

CONCLUSION

18.    I hope you enjoy your course.
