RYA Level 1 Two Day Course

AIM

1.       The aims of the course are to teach: -

a.       Sailing and boat handling in a safe environment.

b.       A basic knowledge of sailing and the ability able to handle a dinghy in light winds

c.       To ensure maximum fun while learning.

TIMINGS

2.        0900           Training starts

          1700           Training session ends.

THEORY

3.       The sources of the sailing theory are the RYA Handbook, your Instructor, presentations and the issued precis.

4        As the emphasis is gaining practical skills and the time ashore is limited, may we ask that use the handbook and precis, as preparation for the following session.

CLOTHING

5.       Wear layers of warm clothing, protected by a wind / waterproof layer.    To protect your feet and the boat wear canvas shoes / trainers / wet boots / sailing wellies but NOT bare feet, high heels or gardening wellies!  Always bring several changes of clothing and a towel with you, as you are going to get wet!!

SAFETY

6.       Buoyancy Aids   You MUST ALWAYS wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket on jetties or afloat in a boat.     Students are expected to provide their own, which are rated for the size and weight of the user.     As an interim measure, the club will lend you one.

7.       Lifting    Please take care to lift boats correctly, some of them are very heavy and  awkward.

8.       Falling    The slipways can be very slippery near the waterline.    The pontoons wobble and have things to trip over.

9.       First Aid      The first aid box is near the payphone at the entrance to the galley and the list of

qualified first aiders is on the wall above it.

10.     NOK            In case of accident we have asked you for the details of your next of kin.

11.     Cold            If you are getting cold whilst on the water, please tell your Instructor

12.     Medication  If you are on medication that you think we may need to know about, please

tell us.

EQUIPMENT

13.     Please take great care of the boats and equipment.  The boats are on loan from the Army, belong to the club or are privately owned; damage is costly and time consuming to repair. It also usually means that valuable sailing time is lost.         Please always report any damage!  Please put the kit away after use and make sure it is secure.

INSTRUCTION

14.     The course programme is not rigid.     Weather conditions may need alterations to the sequence, but all the listed exercises will be covered during the course.

15.     The Handbook & Logbook will be issued  (the cost is covered by the course fee) and you will get the appropriate certificate at the end of the course.              Ask your Instructor to sign off the stages of your progress in your Log Book. If you are having any problems or are not happy with any aspect of the course, please discuss them with your instructors or with me.

15.     Each person is individual; we expect them to progress at their own rate.    We will help you to progress, but the chasing of awards is not part of our aim.

16.     The Club is indebted to the Instructors who are all volunteers and willingly give up their precious time to ensure that we are able to offer these courses to new members.

CONCLUSION

16.     By the end of the course you should have a basic knowledge of seamanship and be able to safely and competently sail your dinghy in light wind conditions.

17.    Enjoy your sailing!!
